There have been flare-ups, but the situation was under control as of July 26. In Corfu, the fires are mainly focused on the north-eastern areas of the island. Resorts in the north are, however, operating as normal. Sources on the ground say that while most properties have suffered at most superficial damage, they cannot reopen until utilities are restored. ![]() Some hotels are affected in resorts in the southeast, including Gennadi, Kiotari, Lardos, Lindos, Pefki and Plimiri. Rhodes is by far the worst affected by fire, although as of July 28, the fires were under control, and as of July 29 the state of emergency has been lifted. However, hundreds of firefighters are still deployed in key hotspots. The wildfires that have been burning on Rhodes, Corfu and Evia, as well as at Diakopto in the Peloponnese, are under control. These include: the Cycladic Islands (Amorgos, Anafi, Andros, Antiparos, Delos, Ios, Kea, Kimolos, Kythnos, Milos, Mykonos, Naxos, Paros, Folegandros, Santorini, Serifos, Sifnos, Sikinos, Syros and Tinos), the Sporades (Alonissos, Skiathos, Skopelos and Skyros), and the northern resorts of Thessaloniki.īeating down the flames of a wildfire in Rhodes (Getty Images) Which islands are affected by the fires? There are over 200 inhabited islands in Greece and most of these were not affected by the wildfires at all and holidays are taking place as normal. Which islands aren’t affected by the wildfires? This includes the use of outdoor grills, the throwing of lit cigarettes, and use of machinery that might cause sparks. Temperatures are still fairly high and the official advice is to be especially careful and avoid doing anything that can cause a fire by negligence. As of August 2, the nation’s General Secretariat for Civil Protection has declared that the number of regions at extreme and very high risk of fire is now zero.
